Semantic search: Evolution of the search landscape

As search changes, optimization follows. Over time, queries have evolved with new types due to certain factors including devices and input methods. Aside from our laptops and PCs, modern technology allows us to search from a variety of devices such as our smartphones, tablets and even TVs. And from just typing with a keyboard, now we can search using our voice to applications like Google Now, Cortana, Sherpa or Siri.

Users look and demand for precision that long tail queries have increased. From the former “more general” queries, these advances moved us to “more specific” queries. For example, searches go from “restaurants in New York” to “where to eat Chinese food in New York”. This evolution pushes search engines to adapt and provide more relevant results for the users.

So, what is Semantic Search?

Google and Wikipedia definition goes,

Semantic search seeks to improve search accuracy by understanding searcher intent and the contextual meaning of terms as they appear in the searchable dataspace, whether on the Web or within a closed system, to generate more relevant results.”

While Techopedia defines it as,

Semantic search is a data searching technique in a which a search query aims to not only find keywords, but to determine the intent and contextual meaning of the words a person is using for search.”

From these definitions, we can conclude the two important concepts in semantic search – intent states exactly what the user is looking for, while context gives meaning to the whole search or basically everything that surrounds a search.

As a result, search engines are able to understand and connect these different queries the way people expect. Like now, Google pays more attention to the context of a search than the basic keywords. If you search for panda without providing any specification, the search engine would return results about the bear native or the one found in China, which is correct. But panda could also mean other things, like Google update, antivirus, or a Chinese restaurant.
